Mission Statement

The Unitarian Universalist United Nations Office promotes the goal of world community with peace, liberty and justice for all, as reflected in the United Nations Charter. Through targeted education, advocacy and outreach, we engage Unitarian Universalists in support of international cooperation and the work of the United Nations.

Dear Friends,

Save the date!  Our 2014 Intergenerational Spring Seminar will be April 3-5 (youth arrive on April 2nd).  We will focus on the rights of indigenous peoples with a concentration on the environment.
In case you missed it: here are the minutes for the May 14th Intergen Spring Seminar 2013 Recap Call (this is a .doc file).  If you would like to hear the recording of the call, please request it by emailing me (kjacob@uua.org).  The 2013 Intergenerational Spring Seminar Statement is now available online for your viewing.

We recently completed our summer Envoy Check-in calls.  Did you get a phone call from the UN office in the last few weeks?  We called to check that we have the right contact information and to ask a few questions about your team and your work as an envoy.  We also asked for your suggestions to improve the envoy program.  If you did not receive a call or have yet to return our call, please email or call so that we complete this database update! This is also a great time to get new people to join your Envoy team and ensure their name is added to our database. This year's summer updates will be complete by the end of August.

We will be having another training in late July or early August - do you have a suggestion of a topic or topics you would like to cover? Email your suggestions to kjacob@uua.org.

In Peace, Love & Justice,

Kamila Jacob
Envoy Outreach Coordinator

June/July Task List

If you are struggling to complete any tasks, please email or call to let me know.

Remember to Update Envoy Coordinator with 2013-2014 goals, first 15 envoys to reply will be featured in the August Newsletter!

Task 1

Now that you have booked your UN Sunday event or service it is time to schedule your planning meetings and create a timeline for yourself to ensure the least amount of stress!  Email me your plan/timeline to let me know you are working on this.  We can also exchange ideas, feedback and suggestions.  We are finalizing our first draft of the UN Sunday Packet.  Let me know if you would like to receive a copy and help us edit.

Task 2

Announce our newest addition to our Climate Change Initiative, the Climate Action Teams (CATs)!  We have created a one pager you can download and read to make your announcement.

Task 3

Create a timeline for July-December 2013 and send to Envoy Coordinator.  What events will you have? When will your first Intergenerational Spring Seminar fundraiser be?  When will you be making announcements about the UU-UNO at the pulpit?  How often will you update the UU-UNO table/bulletin board?  When will you be attending other committee meetings to share similar work?  If you would like to do a timeline for the whole year that would be great!  Send that along and then send an update in December in case there have been changes.

UUA General Assembly Recap

The Envoy Breakfast was a great success.  We enjoyed delicious food and fantastic company.  We started the day with a bit of UU-UNO history and updates.  We then had a youthful check-in, choosing our preference - broccolli or spinach - then shared which we felt would be the best tool to build a shelter in case of a zombie apocalypse.  I must say we are a joyful and creative bunch!  We then used our time to talk amongst our table members and share our work with the larger group.  Each attendee received a folder with updated flyers and brochures and were able to engage in discussion with fellow envoys about their work across the U.S.

The reception was beautiful.  We had a wonderful selection of food and the room was filled with good vibes and commitment to the work of the UN office from all those who attended. We began by showing the film first screened at the 50th anniversary event last year (this is available online or if you would like a DVD please contact the office: unitednations@uua.org).  We then had our Dana Greeley Award winner, Dylan Debelis, share an excerpt from his sermon.  Finally we gave out the Blue Ribbon Award plaques to congregational representatives and envoys.

There were congregations who didn't send a representative so they did not get their plaque...
  • Unitarian Congregation in Mississauga in ON Canada
  • First Unitarian Congregation of Toronto in ON Canada
  • First Unitarian Congregation of Ottawa in ON Canada
  • Prescott Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Prescott, AZ
  • Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Columbia, MD
  • Unitarian Universalist Church of Las Cruces of Las Cruces, NM
  • Unitarian Universalist Church of Buffalo of Buffalo, NY
  • Unitarian Universalist Congregation at Rock Tavern of Rock Tavern, NY
  • All Souls Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Watertown, NY
  • Unitarian Universalist Community Church, Washington County of Hillsboro, OR
  • Unitarian Society of Germantown of Philadelphia, PA
  • First Unitarian Church of Dallas of Dallas, TX
  • Cedars Unitarian Universalist Church of Bainbridge, WA

We are packaging and sending out the plaques this week.  Please reply if the plaque should go somewhere other than your congregations' mailing address. It would be much appreciated if you can make a small donation to cover the cost if shipping the plaque.  Please remember to keep us informed if you will not have a representative at CUC ACM or UUA GA so that we can send your plaque directly to you.
